Will Permanent Lights Damage My Roof?

The most common worry, answered from the fascia down: where the track mounts, why shingles are never touched, and what a bad install looks like so you can spot one.

Where it mounts

Start at the fascia, not the roof.

The short answer, in case that's all you came for: the track fastens to your fascia board, tucked up under the gutter line. Nothing goes through your shingles. The roof surface is never part of the job.

Here's the anatomy behind that. Along the eave of most houses there's a fascia board — the flat vertical trim running the length of the roof edge, the board your gutters already hang on. Behind and above it, the soffit runs back to the wall. The shingles start where the fascia stops. Our low-profile track mounts on that fascia, color-matched to it, sitting in the shadow line under the gutter. On a run with no gutter, it follows the same line along the fascia or trim. Where the architecture calls for it — a soffit return, a porch ceiling, the rake of a gable — the track follows the trim instead.

So every fastener lands in trim lumber that was already fastened to the structure, in a plane that sheds water down and away from the wall. It's the same board your gutter hangers are in.

Two things happen before anything gets mounted. We walk the roofline at the demo and look at the fascia itself — soft spots, rot, paint failure, a run where the gutter is pulling away. If a stretch isn't sound, you hear about it while you're still deciding, not on install day. Second, we plan where the controller and power supply go — out of sight — so there's no box on the front of your house and no wire crossing a wall.

Why it matters

A roof is a water system, not a surface.

Each course of shingles laps the one below it so water moves down the slope and off the edge without ever finding a seam. Every hole put through that field is a place water can get under, and a place somebody has to deal with later.

That's the practical case against attaching lights to a roof. It isn't that one screw leaks tomorrow — a sealed penetration might hold for years. It's that you've added maintenance items to your roof that nobody will remember are there. Sealant is a consumable. Sun and heat cycle it. Years later, somebody is up there for an entirely different reason and finds holes.

It shows up in two other places. A home inspection: inspectors write up penetrations, and once it's in the report the buyer's agent asks about it and somebody negotiates over it. And your roof paperwork: we're not going to tell you what your particular shingle or workmanship coverage says — read it, or ask the roofer who installed it. What we'll say is that the cleanest position to be in is having nothing to explain.

Fascia-mounted track sidesteps the conversation entirely. When the roof eventually gets replaced, the crew is working on the deck and the shingles while the lighting sits on the trim below them. Tell your roofer the track is there and coordinate the edge work — but nothing has to come out of the shingle field, because nothing was ever in it.

The tricky parts

Gutters, dormers, gables and everything in between.

Rooflines aren't straight lines. Most of the questions we get are about the places where the geometry gets interesting.

Gutters and gutter guards

The track runs on the fascia under the gutter line, so it sits beside your gutters rather than through them, and guards sit on top of the gutter in a different plane. Neither is in the other's way, and cleaning gutters works exactly as it always has. If yours are hung unusually, that's a demo-day conversation.

Dormers

A dormer has its own small fascia and trim, and that's what the track follows — same rule at a smaller scale. Whether a dormer gets lit at all is a design call: some rooflines read better with them included, others get busy. You'll see it on your own house before you decide.

Gables and peaks

The rake edge of a gable is trim, not shingle, so the track can follow it up the angle and draw the peak instead of stopping flat at the eave. Gables and peaks are also the parts of a roofline that add real labor, which is why we measure the house instead of quoting from a photo.

Porches, bays and returns

Front porches, bay windows and soffit returns all carry trim of their own. We run track where it holds the line of the architecture, so by daylight it reads as one more piece of trim. What we don't do is fake a straight line across a feature that isn't straight.

How to spot one

What a bad install looks like.

You may be comparing two or three companies, or looking at a system a neighbor already has. Most of what separates a good install from a bad one is visible from the driveway, in daylight, before anything is switched on.

Done right

  • Track on fascia or trim, under the gutter line, color-matched to the board it's mounted to.
  • No fasteners anywhere in the shingle field — the roof surface is untouched.
  • Wire runs concealed: nothing stapled across siding, no slack looping off an eave.
  • Penetrations land in trim, and they're sealed.
  • Low-voltage system, with the controller and power supply placed out of sight.
  • By day, from the street, you have to look for it.

Walk away

  • Screws driven through shingles, or track laid across the roof surface itself.
  • White track on a dark fascia, or the reverse — a color nobody matched to the house.
  • Exposed wire stapled down siding or trim, or bare runs bridging the gaps.
  • Unsealed holes — or a smear of caulk over a hole treated as the whole plan.
  • Track wandering off the trim line: high in one bay, low in the next, a crooked daylight stripe.
  • A controller or power supply screwed to the front of the house where you see it every day.

One distinction worth making: seasonal strand lighting is a different job. Those go up on clips that hook a shingle edge or a gutter lip and come back down in January — no staples, no nails, no drilling. What to ask

Eight questions for any installer, including us.

Plain answers are the point. A company that gets vague about mounting is telling you something.

  • Where exactly does the track mount on my house — fascia, soffit or roof? Ask them to stand in the yard and point.
  • Will any fastener go through a shingle? The answer should be no, with no pause in front of it.
  • How is the track color-matched to my fascia and trim, and can I see it in daylight?
  • Where do the wire runs go, and what is visible from the street at noon?
  • Where will the controller and power supply live, and does the job need a new outlet?
  • How are penetrations sealed, and what happens if a run of my fascia is soft or rotted?
  • What does the warranty cover — hardware, labor, or both? Get the term and the scope in writing.
  • Who does the work: your own crew or a subcontractor, and who do I call after install day?

Warranty

What the 15-year product warranty actually covers.

Your lighting hardware is covered by a 15-year product warranty. Read that sentence precisely, because warranty language is where buyers get turned around.

It is a warranty on the product — the hardware. If a component fails, the part is covered under it. It is not a labor warranty, not a service contract, and it is not a promise about your roof or your fascia. No lighting company's product warranty covers your roof; that's what your roofer's workmanship and your own roof documents are for. Which is the real point of this page: the way you protect the roof isn't a warranty at all. It's an install that never went near it.

So ask two separate questions of anyone quoting you, us included. How long is the hardware covered, and what happens when somebody has to come out to the house? Ask us about service at your quote and you'll know exactly what to expect before you buy anything. And if a company is selling you a “lifetime” anything, ask them to write down whose lifetime and which parts.

Bottom line

Nothing to explain later.
